Liberty Flames Athletics
The Liberty Flames are the full fledged, NCAA Division One Athletics Program of Liberty University, featuring the following sports: Football Men's Basketball Women's Basketball Men's Cross Country Women's Cross Country Men's Track and Field Women's Track and Field Baseball Softball Volleyball Field Hockey Women's Lacrosse Swimming Men's Tennis Women's Tennis Men's Soccer Women's Soccer Golf Cheerleading The Flames are members of the Big South Conference, other members include: The Radford Highlanders, the Virginia Military Institute Keydets, the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, the High Point Panthers, the Winthrop Eagles, the Presbyterian Blue Hose, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, and the Campbell Fighting Camels. The Stony Brook Seawolves are also a member for football. During the 2009-10 year, Liberty won 8 Big South titles including the conference’s first ever “Double Triple” by capturing the championships for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The football team and women’s basketball team also won their third straight conference championship. Following its same goals during the 2010-11 year, Liberty again won 8 Big South titles with football and volleyball winning their fourth consecutive championships. Golf won its first-ever Big South championship, winning by 31 strokes. Cross country and Track and Field won their fifth consecutive “Triple Crown” on the men’s side by winning conference titles in men’s cross country, men’s indoor track and field, and men’s outdoor track field. The Flames won their fourth consecutive Big South Sasser Cup championship, which is awarded to the best overall athletics program in the conference, during the 2010-11 year. This is their ninth Sasser Cup title overall, tying Liberty with Coastal Carolina for the most in conference history. In addition, Liberty earned the Big South’s Women’s All-Sport trophy for the second year in a row. Liberty also captured its sixth individual national championship during the 2010-11 year when Sam Chelanga won the NCAA Division 1 championships for Cross Country and the 5k for Outdoor Track and Field. Chelanga won back-to-back Cross Country championships and is a four time NCAA Division 1 champion.
